R-Type Dimensions 3 Review (Switch 2): Beautiful, Brutal, and Broken at Launch
·Gabriel Mateo

The remake R-Type fans waited fifteen years for…. undermined by hitboxes that don’t do what they show you.
The first time I booted R-Type Dimensions 3 on Switch 2, it looked great and it felt great. The new 3D visuals pop. The music hits. The whole thing feels like a proper modern treatment of a game that deserved this for years. I was in. Then I started dying. A lot. Not because the game was hard. Because the hitboxes were all messed up and buggy.

R-Type is a game built entirely on precision. You memorize patterns. You thread your ship through gaps that look impossible and make them possible. That only works when you can trust what you see on screen. In Dimensions 3 at launch on Switch 2, you can’t. The hitboxes don’t match the visuals. You get clipped by things that didn’t touch you. You die to debris that passed through empty space on your screen. It doesn’t feel like a hard game. It feels like a broken one.
That’s the worst thing that can happen in a shmup. You can forgive rough edges. You can adapt to tight difficulty. You can’t adapt to a hitbox you can’t see and can’t predict. Every run turns into a guessing game instead of a skill check.
This wasn’t a personal experience. The hitbox problems were the loudest complaint across every platform from day one. Kotaku’s review described constant deaths that felt like they needed to be reviewed by a jury. Every stage brought at least five kills the reviewer couldn’t account for. Nintendo Life landed at a 5 out of 10 and called the accuracy problems a source of “frankly unfair difficulty”…. which is a polite way of saying the core loop doesn’t work the way it should.
Players on Xbox had it even worse. Beyond the hitbox issues, the Xbox version was shipping outright crashes/ hard stops that ended sessions completely. On PC and consoles alike the same core complaint kept surfacing. the collision detection had been changed significantly from the classic versions, and not in a way that felt intentional or balanced. It felt like something that slipped through QA. In a genre where the entire appeal is executing with precision, that’s not a small flaw.
There were also contrast problems that weren’t getting as much attention but were genuinely frustrating. The new 3D art style is gorgeous in isolation, but the colors of enemies, bullets, foreground and background elements don’t always separate clearly enough. In tight sequences it was hard to read what was going to kill you even before the hitbox bugs entered the picture. Multiple reviewers noted the same thing… that they kept switching back to the original 2D mode not because they preferred it aesthetically, but because it was actually readable.

The actual game underneath all of this is something worth caring about. R-Type III: The Third Lightning is widely considered the best entry in the series, and ININ didn’t phone in this remake. Developer KK3 rebuilt every stage, boss, and projectile pattern with high-end 3D graphics and detailed environments while keeping the original design intact. The visual overhaul has real personality rounded, plasticky art that feels like something built by a studio that actually loves the source material.
The new features add genuine value too. Two player co-op is in. Multiple difficulty modes including an Infinite Mode that essentially lets you push through without the punishment. You can swap between the new 3D visuals and the original graphics instantly, mid-run. The Force weapon system is the deepest it’s ever been in this format, and which Force you choose changes how you approach every gauntlet in the game. There’s a lot here. When the performance holds and the hitboxes behave, you can see exactly what this game was supposed to be.

ININ acknowledged the problems publicly on May 25 and committed to fixes. On June 11 they shipped Patch 1.0.1 and it’s a substantial update. The hitbox corrections alone address most of the core complaints: previously oversized hitboxes are corrected, a known safe spot in Stage 1 that was broken at launch has been restored, boss collision is fixed across Stages 2, 3, and 4, and random deaths in Stage 6 caused by Bydo enemies clipping through dimension holes are patched out. Stage 1 even had background thruster effects that were incorrectly dealing damage to the player that’s now fixed too.
The Wave Cannon got a full overhaul with distinct damage values at each charge level, the Force weapon behaviors that were misfiring are corrected, audio looping issues are resolved, and visual readability got a pass as well with better hit flash coloring and background graphic corrections. On paper this is exactly the update the game needed at launch.
The catch is where the patch lives right now. Patch 1.0.1 is Steam only. ININ confirmed that the Steam version is serving as the primary testing and validation platform, and that console versions including Switch and Switch 2 will follow once they clear platform certification. As of this writing, that certification is still pending. Switch 2 players are still on the launch build. The fixes exist. They just aren’t here yet.
R-Type Dimensions 3 on Switch 2 is a game I want to love and can’t fully recommend at launch. The presentation is excellent. The feature set is generous. The base game is one of the best shmups ever made and this remake respects that legacy in almost every way except the one that matters most. Hit boxes in a shmup aren’t a secondary concern , they’re the whole game. When yours don’t match what’s on screen, every run is compromised. Every death feels unearned. The frustration isn’t the R-Type kind, which teaches you something. It’s the broken kind, which just wastes your time.
The fix is coming. The Steam patch proves ININ knows what needs to change and they’ve done the work to change it. Once that update clears certification and lands on Switch 2, this review score goes up. Until then, if you’re on Nintendo hardware, you’re playing an incomplete version of a game that deserved better at launch. As Always Huge shout out To My guy Derek for keeping the heat coming!

R-Type Dimensions 3 is a gorgeous, feature-rich remake of one of the best shmups ever made undone at launch by hitbox inaccuracies that turn a precision game into a guessing game.
