Twenty-five years later and Toxicity still sounds like four guys walked into a studio, found every rule in modern rock and started breaking them for sport. System of a Down is celebrating the album’s 25th anniversary with a week-long exhibition at Beyond the Streets in Los Angeles from October 13 through October 18, 2026, and because somebody out there still loves us, admission is free.

The gallery at 434 N La Brea Ave is being transformed into a full celebration of the Toxicity era. Fans are getting rare artifacts and ephemera, immersive installations, exclusive merchandise and the visual history surrounding an album that somehow managed to be aggressive, strange, political, vulnerable and catchy without ever asking permission to be any of those things.

Released September 4, 2001, Toxicity debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. More importantly, it became one of those records where you can hear the first few seconds of a track and suddenly remember exactly where you were when the album had everybody in a chokehold. This was heavy music with a pulse, a point of view and absolutely zero interest in behaving normally.

Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian and John Dolmayan built something on that record that was almost impossible to imitate without sounding like you were trying to imitate System of a Down. That is a hell of a legacy. The announcement says the band has sold more than 42 million albums worldwide, and decades later they are still pulling enormous audiences without sanding off the weird edges that made people care in the first place.

Beyond the Streets is a smart home for the celebration. Roger Gastman’s Los Angeles gallery centers graffiti, street art and creators who tend to operate outside polite little cultural boxes. Pairing that space with Toxicity, an album that basically spent its life kicking those boxes across the room, feels almost suspiciously logical.

The System of a Down x Beyond the Streets: Toxicity 25th Anniversary Exhibition runs October 13 through October 18, and no ticket is required. If you are in Los Angeles and this album ever rattled your speakers, annoyed your neighbors or permanently altered your definition of heavy music, go see the history up close. Twenty-five years later, Toxicity still refuses to sit quietly in the corner. Good.
