Capcom’s long-awaited revival helped push the entire sword-slinging franchise beyond ten million worldwide sales.

Twenty years without a new game should have turned Onimusha into a museum piece. Instead, Capcom brought the series back, handed Miyamoto Musashi a blade and watched one million players show up on launch day ready to carve through demons.

Capcom officially announced that Onimusha: Way of the Sword surpassed one million worldwide sales during its first day of release. That performance also carried the complete Onimusha franchise beyond ten million lifetime units, giving Capcom another successful revival from its stacked library of classic properties.

That is not nostalgia quietly selling a few collector’s editions, fam. One million copies in a single day means Onimusha returned with enough force to compete inside a crowded modern gaming market after more than two decades without a proper new installment.

Set in Edo-era Kyoto, Way of the Sword follows Miyamoto Musashi as he battles supernatural creatures using the Oni powers and sword-based combat that defined the original games. Capcom modernized that foundation with current technology, more cinematic presentation and an expanded combat system without stripping away the supernatural samurai identity that made the franchise stand out.

The publisher also spent months rebuilding awareness through multiple demos, convention appearances and hands-on previews. According to Capcom’s official announcement, those efforts helped broaden the audience before the September 4 launch across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.

More importantly, Capcom directly connected the game’s success to its strategy of reactivating properties that have gone extended periods without new releases. Translation: if a forgotten franchise still has an audience and Capcom believes it can deliver the right game, that vault is staying open.

This comeback sends a message across the industry. Players are hungry for more than annual sequels and whatever monetization machine somebody cooked up during a quarterly earnings call. Give them a respected property, modern gameplay and a revival that understands why the original mattered, and they will show up.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword waited more than 20 years for its moment. One million copies later, Musashi is officially back, the Genma are catching steel and this franchise is FUEGO.
