Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential Gets a Folio Society Collector’s Edition With Paul Pope Art

There are books about food, there are books about chefs, then there’s Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential. That joint kicked open the kitchen door, dragged all the dirty laundry into the dining room, lit a cigarette next to it and basically said, “Yeah, this is what really happens back here.” More than 25 years after Bourdain introduced readers to the beautiful madness, bad behavior, brutal hours and strange family that lives behind restaurant doors, The Folio Society is giving his legendary memoir a serious collector’s edition.
Available October 13, 2026, Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly gets the full Folio Society treatment with rare photography from Jake Chessum, a brand-new preface from Bourdain’s longtime friend and Hungry Ghosts co-writer Joel Rose, plus an original portrait by legendary comic artist and Bourdain friend Paul Pope. This is not just the old book wearing a fancy new jacket either. The whole package feels built around the man, his voice, his New York roots and that punk-rock energy that made Bourdain impossible to confuse with anybody else.
Rose’s new preface goes back to something that can get lost when talking about Bourdain the television personality: before the fame exploded, the man could flat-out write. Rose remembers believing in Bourdain’s natural voice from the moment he met him, calling attention to the precision and intimacy of his prose before CNN, the Food Network and worldwide celebrity turned that voice into something millions recognized. That perspective hits different now because Kitchen Confidential captures Bourdain before the entire planet knew who Anthony Bourdain was.
The visual presentation sounds just as personal. Kishan Rajani designed the cover, slipcase and endpapers, with Chessum’s photography worked directly into the package and an adapted food list written in Bourdain’s own handwriting appearing on the slipcase. Inside are 12 rare photographs from Chessum, whose portfolio includes everybody from Amy Winehouse and The Strokes to Brad Pitt, Kate Moss, Bill Gates and Barack Obama. The photos were taken during a two-day New York shoot in 2008, giving the edition another genuine connection to Bourdain instead of loading it up with random archival material and calling it “deluxe.”

Then you got Paul Pope entering the kitchen. Pope created an entirely new portrait specifically for this edition, approaching Bourdain through the younger, punkier version of the man and pulling inspiration from New York’s Lower East Side and the music Bourdain loved. Pope described Bourdain as somebody special he was grateful to know and work with, closing his thoughts with the perfect little salute: “Bourdain forever forever Bourdain.”
Physically, Folio Society went all-in too. The book features blocked cloth binding, gilded edges and a larger cookbook-style format designed to let Chessum’s photography breathe, with many of the images running across double-page spreads. At £85 in the UK and $130 in the U.S., nobody is pretending this is the paperback you toss into your backpack next to yesterday’s chopped cheese. This is aimed straight at Bourdain fans, book collectors, food heads and anybody who wants a shelf-worthy edition of one of the most influential food memoirs ever published.
The crazy thing is Kitchen Confidential still works because underneath all the sex, drugs, busted kitchens, sharp knives, questionable decisions and restaurant insanity was a dude who genuinely loved the craft and respected the people doing the work. Bourdain took readers from washing dishes on Cape Cod to surviving the pressure cooker of New York fine dining, telling stories with enough swagger, humor and honesty to make you feel like you somehow ended up sitting beside him after closing time. Plenty about restaurant culture has changed since 2000, yet that voice still comes off the page sounding alive, restless and unmistakably his.
The Folio Society edition of Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly is available exclusively through The Folio Society beginning October 13, 2026, at 4 p.m. UK / 11 a.m. ET / 8 a.m. PT, priced at £85 / $130 US.
Twenty-six years later, Bourdain can still make you hungry, make you laugh and make you wonder what the hell is really happening behind that kitchen door. Some voices age. His still cuts through the noise.
