10 Million AD Throws a Teenage Prodigy Into an Earth Without Humanity

The story begins in 1997, when Ellie discovers a time machine hidden beneath her family home. It belonged to her late grandfather, who spent his final years trying to build the impossible in hopes of saving Ellie’s dying mother. A power surge turns that discovery into a one-way nightmare and launches Ellie into a version of Earth so far removed from her own that human civilization has become ancient history.

What is waiting for her is not some shiny future city. Humanity is extinct, ruins are being swallowed by a transformed planet, and massive eyeless predators hunt by sound. Bermudez gets to go big with the shattered moon, creatures and landscapes, while Lopez keeps the story tied to Ellie’s grief and the family tragedy that put the time machine in her hands in the first place.

That combination is where 10 Million AD sounds most interesting. Time travel stories can disappear into their own mechanics pretty quickly, but this one is using the enormous scale of ten million years to make Ellie feel genuinely isolated. She is not trying to get home from next Tuesday. She is standing in a world where everything she knew has been erased by time.

The book expands Brain Poison’s growing science-fiction line alongside Vox Wormhall: Robot Detective, BoredSpace and Cyberpink. The publisher describes the new title as a coming-of-age adventure built around survival, grief and large-scale worldbuilding, with Lopez and Bermudez pushing into a more expansive corner of the studio’s catalog.
