Magic: The Gathering Goes Back to Dominaria With Mage of Zhalfir

·Al Mega

Wepa, Magic fam, now THIS is how you dig into the history of a character who has been bending time, breaking reality and making Dominaria nervous for decades. Dark Horse Comics and Wizards of the Coast are teaming up for Magic: The Gathering: Mage of Zhalfir, a brand-new 12-issue series centered on Teferi Akosa, and instead of tossing us into some random corner of the Multiverse and hoping we care, they are taking this thing straight back to where the trouble started.

The series launches in January 2027, with Ray Fawkes writing, Rapha Lobosco handling art for the first four issues, Jão Canola on colors and AndWorld Design on letters. Paris Alleyne delivers the main cover for issue #1, while Mateus Manhanini comes through with the variant. That is a pretty damn serious creative crew to put behind Teferi, especially when you are dealing with a character whose entire existence is tied to time manipulation, history, consequences and enough magical chaos to make your average Planeswalker reconsider their career choices.

The story takes us back to Tolarian Academy, where a younger, hungrier and probably way too confident Teferi is studying under none other than Urza. Yes, THAT Urza. Teferi already believes greatness is waiting for him, which, to be fair, is not exactly an insane thought considering who he eventually becomes. The problem is that playing around with time and space is not the kind of classroom assignment where you screw up, get a red mark and try again next week. You mess with reality the wrong way and suddenly everybody is having a very bad millennium.

That is where this book immediately has my attention. Teferi has always been one of those characters where the power is cool, but the consequences are what make him interesting. Dark Horse leaning into his younger years gives them a chance to show us the arrogance, curiosity, mistakes and hard lessons that helped create the man longtime Magic fans already know. We have seen what Teferi can do. Now we get to spend some real time seeing how he became that dude in the first place.

And I really like that they are giving this story 12 issues instead of trying to cram decades of lore, trauma, magic and character development into a quick four-issue sprint. Teferi has accumulated a ridiculous amount of history across Magic: The Gathering, so there is plenty to unpack here without rushing through every major moment like somebody trying to finish a campaign five minutes before the game store closes.

For longtime players, Mage of Zhalfir could add some much-needed texture to a character they have followed for years. For newer readers, going back to young Teferi at Tolarian Academy might actually be one of the cleaner ways to meet him without needing a corkboard, twenty wiki tabs and a PhD in Dominaria history sitting next to you.

If Dark Horse and Wizards let this story breathe and really lean into the danger, ego and insanity that comes with learning how to manipulate time itself, Magic: The Gathering: Mage of Zhalfir could end up being a very fun look at one of the most important figures in the game’s history.
