Jessica Jones Goes Back to ALIAS for Her 25th Anniversary

Wepa, Marvel is taking Jessica Jones back to where the trouble started, and they are bringing the original crew with her. Twenty-five years after Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos introduced Jessica in Alias, the two creators are reuniting for Jessica Jones: Alias, a new five-issue limited series launching this December.

This is not Marvel slapping an anniversary logo on an old idea and calling it a celebration. Bendis and Gaydos helped define Jessica Jones as the bruised, stubborn, complicated private investigator who could stand in the middle of the Marvel Universe without ever feeling like just another superhero in a costume. Getting them back together for the character’s 25th anniversary gives this project some real weight.

The new story finds Jessica trying to return to basics after what Marvel describes as a tumultuous run as First Lady of New York. Naturally, back to basics does not last long. A seemingly straightforward abduction case drags her away from Hell’s Kitchen and into some of the strangest corners of the Marvel Universe, putting the veteran P.I. into territory considerably bigger and weirder than the job she thought she was taking.

Bendis told Entertainment Weekly that Jessica has remained unusually personal to him because of the emotional connection readers have built with the character. That connection is a big part of why the original Alias still matters. Jessica was allowed to be messy, angry, funny, damaged and resilient without being cleaned up for easy consumption, and readers recognized something real in that.

Michael Gaydos returning on interiors is just as important. His visual language is part of Jessica Jones’ DNA, and Marvel’s preview pages immediately reconnect the character with that grounded, noir-flavored atmosphere. Original Alias cover artist David Mack is also back, giving this reunion another piece of the creative identity that helped make the original series stand apart.

The first issue will also feature variant covers by Corin Howell, Ito and Miguel Mercado alongside Mack’s main cover and a Mack virgin variant. For longtime Jessica Jones readers, though, the biggest attraction is simple: Bendis, Gaydos and Mack are working on Jessica together again rather than Marvel merely revisiting the Alias name without the people who built it.
