Crusaders, this one had me at: the sun only rises when somebody dies for it.

This is the kind of fantasy hook that makes you stop, look at the page again, and say, “Okay, what the hell is going on in this world?” Brothers Kevin and Tyson Cantrell are about to answer that question with The Mourning Tower: Volume I, the first installment of The Kovadrin Chronicles, launching on Kickstarter September 15.

Set in the world of Kovadrah, The Mourning Tower takes place beneath an endless night that has lasted for generations. Once every 70 years, the Mourning Tower awakens, champions are chosen from the six kingdoms, and one of them is expected to reach the summit and sacrifice their life so the sun can rise again. Yeah, fam, this world literally runs on sacrifice. No pressure.

Ilyas Kalivar is one of the six warriors chosen for that brutal climb, but the story is not simply about surviving a tower full of danger and winning some fantasy-world trophy. Ilyas is carrying a buried secret that threatens his place among the champions, forcing him into a nasty question: is redemption worth paying the tower’s price, or could breaking this entire cycle doom everybody he is trying to save?

The premise is already strong, but the Cantrell Brothers are clearly swinging beyond a standard “here is our comic, please back it” campaign. Their goal is to make Kovadrah feel like a place readers can discover piece by piece. The graphic novel uses an elaborate visual language of kingdoms, symbols, architecture, artifacts, rituals, and mythology, and the sample pages absolutely lean into that worldbuilding instead of treating it like decorative wallpaper.

The Diamond Kingdom of Darxelem gives you a damn good look at that approach. The city does not feel like a generic fantasy backdrop tossed behind the characters. The towering geometry, limited gold-and-black palette, monumental architecture, and tiny figures moving through the environment make the world itself feel imposing. You immediately understand that these characters are living inside traditions and systems much older than they are.

The project also stretches beyond the printed page. Select artwork in The Mourning Tower incorporates augmented-reality elements that can be viewed through a mobile device, allowing illustrations to shift and move. The larger project also includes an original musical score and physical collectibles designed to pull pieces of Kovadrah into the real world.

One of the sample spreads lays out the nightmare at the center of the mythology in beautiful fashion: Kovadrah has endured endless night, starlight is harvested to sustain crops and livestock, and the world depends on a dawn that arrives only once every 70 years. That sunlight comes with a human price. The mythology sounds massive on paper, but what impressed me in the preview is how much of it is communicated visually instead of dumping a fantasy encyclopedia on the reader’s head.

There is also a fully custom playing-card deck created in collaboration with Theory11, transforming the champions, kingdoms, and characters of Kovadrah into its own card system. Kickstarter rewards are expected to range from the graphic novel itself through playing cards, original music, apparel, fine-art prints, premium editions, and a limited-edition sculpted statue of Ilyas Kalivar.

If all of that sounds like ceremonial worldbuilding and slow-burn lore, do not get too comfortable. Another preview page goes straight from ritual to chaos as an assassination erupts around the High Meridian and the champions are forced to react. That contrast matters. The book has a heavily designed, almost illuminated-manuscript aesthetic, but the Cantrell Brothers are not afraid to let the page explode when the story calls for it.

The September 15 Kickstarter is intended to fund the first physical edition of The Mourning Tower: Volume I, with a stated goal of $20,000 and worldwide shipping. The creators are already looking past this opening volume too. A serialized novella set in Kovadrah is planned for January 2027, with additional stories, characters, histories, collectibles, and collaborations in development.

Comic Crusaders has always had a soft spot for indie creators who are actually trying to build something, not just imitate whatever is already sitting on the shelf. Kevin and Tyson Cantrell look like they are approaching Kovadrah as a complete creative universe, with the comic functioning as the doorway rather than the finish line. That ambition can go sideways fast if the story gets buried under the worldbuilding, but based on the sample pages, there is a real identity here. The art direction is confident, the mythology has teeth, and the central hook is exactly the kind of twisted fantasy idea that makes me want to know what happens when somebody finally says, “Nah, maybe we stop feeding people to this damn tower.”

The Mourning Tower: Volume I launches on Kickstarter September 15, 2026. If epic fantasy, dense visual worldbuilding, indie comics, or elaborate collector editions are your lane, this is one to keep on the radar. The Crusade Never Ends!
