Creature Corps Turns 16-Bit Monster Battles Into a Dystopian Blood Sport

Yo, this is the kind of comic pitch that hits an old-school gamer right in the cartridge slot. Creature Corps takes the monster-battling fun we grew up with, drags it through a broken future, adds corporate greed, teenage exploitation, medical debt, and then says, “Cool, now fight.” That is a WILD recipe, and Curt Pires and Jok look ready to cook with it.

Image Comics will launch Creature Corps #1 on December 2, 2026, reuniting writer Curt Pires with artist Jok for a 60-page debut priced at $4.99. The setup imagines fantastical creatures slipping out of a shattered future and into the present, where humanity does what humanity always does when it discovers something amazing: monetizes the hell out of it.

The displaced creatures become the foundation of a brutal competitive league powered by teenage “trainers.” Years earlier, Dusty Gotem became World Champion at only 14 before a devastating event drove him away from the entire business. Now older and living far from the spectacle, he gets dragged back when his mother becomes critically ill and the medical bills start piling up. The road back into the creature trade means confronting both the monsters and the system he thought he escaped.

Pires describes the series as a collision of 16-bit gaming nostalgia, the dark deconstruction of The Boys, and the time-travel chaos of Back to the Future. That is a lot of gasoline in one tank, but the core idea gives it something stronger than nostalgia bait. Creature battling is not presented as harmless collectible fun. These animals are refugees from another time, and the league built around them sounds exploitative from the jump.

Jok calls the book a continent-spanning, era-hopping sci-fi fantasy packed with wildly creative creatures. That should be the real visual hook. Monster comics live or die on whether the designs feel memorable, and this series is clearly giving Jok permission to swing for the fences.

The first issue is also going full collector mode with a huge variant program. Artists include Jok, Jarret Hartnell, Tyler Kirkham, Flops and Jae Lee, with retailer incentive covers, foil treatments, a video-game-magazine homage, and a Booster Bundle edition that includes one of five random trading cards from the upcoming Creature Corps Trading Card Game.
