WEPAAAA! X-Force is officially in trouble, and this time the solution is apparently giving the detonator to Boom-Boom. Marvel has announced FUGITIVE X-FORCE, a new five-issue limited series launching this December from writer Tim Seeley and artist Áthila Fabbio, picking up the fallout from Inglorious X-Force and putting Tabitha Smith in charge of one of Marvel’s most dangerous mutant strike teams.

After Cable disappears and X-Force finds itself framed for a horrific crime, the team is forced off the grid with basically everybody hunting them. Boom-Boom steps up as leader for the first time, taking command of a lineup that includes Archangel, Hellverine, Domino and Ms. Marvel as they race to find Cable before whatever has compromised him turns into something even worse.

Mi gente, this setup fits X-Force like a tactical glove. X-Force has always worked best when the mission is dirty, the clock is ticking and everybody involved has at least three reasons not to trust anybody else. Putting Boom-Boom at the center gives this chapter some extra juice because Tabitha is not exactly Cable 2.0. She has the experience, the explosives and the attitude, but she also brings a very different energy to a team that is suddenly operating without its usual anchor.

Seeley describes Fugitive X-Force as a direct extension of Inglorious X-Force, following the consequences of that series and forcing the team to pick up the pieces while wanted for murder. His hook is simple and nasty: X-Force is on its own, hanging by a thread, and the person trying to hold the squad together is Boom-Boom. That is exactly the kind of controlled chaos this franchise thrives on.

The series also marks a major milestone for artist Áthila Fabbio, a recent winner of Marvel’s Art Atelier training program, who makes his Marvel series debut here. Fabbio grew up on ’90s X-Men, citing Wolverine, Nightcrawler and especially Cable as favorites, so landing on an X-Force title is a pretty wild full-circle moment. He is stepping into the book with the kind of enthusiasm you want from somebody drawing a team built around guns, claws, wings, hellfire and explosions.

Marvel is also rolling out a strong cover package for Fugitive X-Force #1. The main cover comes from Eric Canete, with additional variants from Mark Bagley, Pere Pérez and Gerardo Sandoval, plus a Canete virgin variant. Bagley’s piece is part of Marvel’s Wanted Variant Cover program, fitting perfectly with a team now operating as fugitives.

Before the new series launches, Inglorious X-Force wraps its current run in October with issues #9 and #10, setting the stage for the next phase. Marvel is clearly treating Fugitive X-Force as the continuation rather than a hard reset, which should reward readers following Seeley’s current X-Force story while still giving the new title a clean, aggressive hook.

Boom-Boom leading X-Force while the entire world wants them locked up? Yeah, somebody at Marvel understood the assignment. Tabitha has spent years learning from Cable. Now she gets to prove she can lead without becoming him.

THE CRUSADE NEVER ENDS!
