Danny Trejo Goes to War With the Apocalypse in Year of the Devil
The screen icon enters creator-owned comics with a supernatural action-horror epic blending Aztec mythology, biblical prophecy, brutal combat, redemption, and one seriously cursed immortal warrior.
Danny Trejo has battled criminals, killers, monsters, and enough cinematic maniacs to fill a maximum-security prison. Now the legendary actor and cultural icon is entering the creator-owned comics arena with Year of the Devil, an original supernatural action-horror graphic novel that throws him directly into a centuries-spanning war against the Devil and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
Set to make its debut at San Diego Comic-Con, Year of the Devil will launch its worldwide crowdfunding campaign on September 29, 2026. The prestige five-issue graphic novel is co-created by Trejo, award-winning transmedia creator Keith Arem, whose credits include Call of Duty, Spider-Man, and Ascend, and writer Chris Yates, known for Marcus Walker: Kingslayer Protocol. Together, the creative team is cooking up a blood-soaked combination of Aztec mythology, biblical prophecy, supernatural horror, and relentless action. Yeah, this thing is coming through the door swinging.
Trejo creatively stars as Diego, an immortal warrior cursed to fight evil across the centuries. His mission is bigger than simply surviving another battle. Diego must confront the Devil and the Four Horsemen while fighting to save the woman he loves and prevent the extinction of humanity. Underneath the supernatural carnage is a deeply personal story about love, sacrifice, regret, and the possibility of earning redemption after a lifetime of violence.
“Year of the Devil is about redemption,” Trejo said. “It’s brutal, emotional, and unlike anything I’ve ever been part of. Diego is a warrior who’s been fighting evil for centuries, but underneath all the violence is a story about love, sacrifice, and second chances.”
That emotional foundation gives the project some real weight. This is not simply Danny Trejo holding a weapon while demons explode behind him, although let’s be honest, nobody is complaining about that visual. The bigger hook is watching an immortal fighter carry the pain of centuries while facing an enemy that cannot be defeated with muscle alone.

The project is also bringing together an international lineup of acclaimed comic book talent. Featured cover artists include Eisner Award-nominated Vanesa R. Del Rey, Carlo Barberi, Raymond Gay, Jonathan Uribe, J. Gonzo, Jaime Carrillo, Willi Roberts, Eskivo, and Kevin Keane. Interior artwork will be provided by Frank Mazzoli, whose credits include Dune and Rebel Moon: Nemesis, alongside additional contributors from across comics and entertainment.
Year of the Devil will receive a major rollout beginning with an industry press reveal and a strong San Diego Comic-Con presence. The wider campaign will include convention appearances, horror and entertainment media coverage, influencer collaborations, podcasts, livestreams, and fan-focused activations. The crowdfunding campaign officially opens on September 29 and concludes on November 2, Día de los Muertos, a fitting final date for a story built around death, prophecy, cultural mythology, and the battle for humanity’s soul.
San Diego Comic-Con attendees will have the opportunity to obtain exclusive ashcan previews and meet Trejo and members of the creative team during special signing opportunities. Fans unable to attend the convention can register now to receive launch notifications and stay informed about exclusive rewards, limited-edition items, and early-bird discounts.
