Crusaders, Doctor Strange is built for stories that can get weird, cosmic, psychedelic, and straight-up unsettling, and Doctor Strange: Endless Nightmare is leaning hard into all of that.
Marvel Arts and Abrams ComicArts have released the new 64-page hardcover graphic novel from writer Kevin J. Anderson and artists Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín, the same creative team behind the acclaimed Dune graphic novel adaptations.
The setup drops Stephen Strange into a waking nightmare after a mysterious hospital patient starts ranting that life is nothing more than the dream of a sleeping god. Then the world stops sleeping. As insomnia spreads and people begin unraveling, Strange has to go directly into the patient’s mind and enter the Nightmare Realm before reality comes apart around him.
Anderson is not playing this one safe. He described the story as a dark, twisted, Lovecraft-inspired Doctor Strange tale, while also bringing back familiar Strange villains and digging up another foe who has barely been seen since the Stan Lee and Steve Ditko era.
The real sell here may be the art. Allén and Martín are getting a playground built for visual chaos, with dreams, reality, horror, and classic Marvel mysticism crashing into one another. There are even shades of Winsor McCay’s Little Nemo in the book’s dream logic, which is a hell of a lane for Doctor Strange to occupy.
