HELLBOY GOES BACK TO HELL: MIKE MIGNOLA UNLEASHES TWO DEVILISH NEW SERIES

Hellboy is heading back downstairs, mi gente, and apparently Hell still has unfinished business with the big red guy. Mike Mignola and Dark Horse Comics are reopening one of the strangest, darkest and most visually unforgettable corners of the Hellboy Universe with two new projects arriving this fall and winter: HELLBOY IN HELL: NOTHING BUT BLOOD in October and HELLBOY IN HELL: PARADE OF HORRORS in December.

First up, Mignola teams with artist Cyrille Pomès, known for Moon and 6,000 Miles to Freedom, for HELLBOY IN HELL: NOTHING BUT BLOOD, bringing readers back into the nightmare landscape that helped redefine the character’s mythology. Then things get even weirder in December when Mignola reunites with Márk László, artist of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: Time is a River, for the two-issue HELLBOY IN HELL: PARADE OF HORRORS. And yes, the setup is exactly as wild as it sounds. Hellboy is attending the Devil’s funeral.

Written by Mignola with art by László, colors by the legendary Dave Stewart, and letters by Clem Robins, Parade of Horrors will feature main covers by László. Issue #1 also gets a variant from Mignola himself, while Bridgit Connell steps in with a variant for issue #2.

Mignola admitted that returning to this particular chapter of Hellboy’s mythology was never really part of the plan. He had considered the doors to Hellboy’s Hell pretty much closed, especially when it came to letting another artist step inside. Then László showed up with the right idea and apparently made it impossible to say no. Mignola found unexplored space between chapters of the original series, particularly around the two dead soldiers introduced in “The Three Gold Whips,” giving László room to expand the mythology without bulldozing what came before.

That approach is probably the smartest way to reopen this world. Instead of treating Hellboy in Hell like some franchise vault begging to be emptied for content, Mignola is using the gaps already sitting inside the mythology. There is history left between the cracks, and these new stories are digging into those spaces rather than rewriting the road already traveled.

Originally published between 2012 and 2016, Hellboy in Hell stands as one of the defining pieces of the entire Hellboy saga. The series finally peeled back major layers surrounding Hellboy’s origins while sending the character through a haunting, surreal vision of damnation that felt completely unlike the standard flames, pitchforks and screaming sinners routine. Mignola built a Hell that was bleak, theatrical, mythic and strangely beautiful all at once.

Now, roughly a decade after that story reached its conclusion, Mignola is inviting a new generation of artists into the sandbox. László has been itching to play there for years. For him, Mignola’s version of Hell was never just background scenery, but a massive visual playground packed with endless villages, dark landscapes and strange figures hiding in every corner. When the opportunity came to pitch another Hellboy story, he knew exactly where he wanted to go. And brother, he is not easing into it.

HELLBOY IN HELL: PARADE OF HORRORS picks up after Nothing But Blood with Hellboy doing what Hellboy does best, trying to find a drink and somehow ending up waist-deep in supernatural insanity. His search leads him into a cemetery where a grotesque procession is underway honoring the death of Satan himself. Naturally, Hellboy is not exactly the guest of honor.

Some of Hell’s demons still have a serious problem with him after their Lord’s murder, which means this funeral procession goes from creepy to violent real quick. The story promises parading demons, dancing skeletons, bloody fights and glimpses into the deeper history of Mignola’s version of Hell. Basically, Christmas came early for anybody who likes their comics loaded with gothic horror, deadpan humor and enough demonic weirdness to make your local priest start sweating.

What makes this return especially interesting is that Hellboy in Hell already carried the weight of something final. Bringing the setting back risks messing with that sense of closure, but Mignola clearly understands the danger. Rather than pretending the original ending never happened, these new stories appear designed to expand the mythology sideways, filling in unexplored moments while preserving the larger arc. That is the sweet spot.

Hellboy has survived Nazis, witches, monsters, gods, apocalypse-level nonsense and more bad decisions than most comic characters could survive across ten lifetimes. Somehow, seeing him wander into Satan’s funeral still feels perfectly on brand.

Mike Mignola may keep thinking he is finished with Hellboy’s Hell, but Hell apparently did not get that memo. And if this new run gives us more skeletons, demons, blood, mythology and Hellboy looking annoyed while everybody around him completely loses their minds, then yeah, bring that madness right back upstairs.
