COMIC CRUSADERS HOT LIST: THE 10 HOTTEST COMICS FOR AUGUST 18th & 19th, 2026

WEPAAAA, Crusaders! Another New Comic Book Day is pulling up to the curb, and this week’s racks are looking like somebody tossed gasoline on the pull list and handed the match to a collector with no impulse control. Thor hits a ridiculous 800-issue milestone. The Absolute Universe is introducing another twisted DC icon. G.I. Joe is dropping first appearances. Sean Murphy is putting the pedal through the damn floor. Kevin Smith has Spider-Man and Hulk dealing with an exorcism. TALESPIN is back in comic shops like Saturday morning cartoons just kicked your front door open. Yeah, mi gente, August 18th and 19th came to WORK!

Key Collector is tracking roughly 88 new comics for Wednesday, August 19 alone, spanning Marvel, DC, Image, IDW, Dark Horse, Mad Cave, Oni, Dynamite, BOOM!, Vault, Bad Idea and a whole lot more. But the Comic Crusaders HOT List has never been about dumping the Diamond/Lunar catalog onto your screen and calling it journalism. Nah. We dig into collector potential, reader excitement, first appearances, new arcs, #1 energy, incentive covers, creator pedigree, franchise heat, speculation chatter and the most important factor of all: which books are people actually gonna walk into the shop asking for?

Remember the golden rule, though. Speculation is speculation. Collect what you love before you start trying to finance your retirement with a 1:50 variant. Nobody has a crystal ball behind the register. What we can do is follow the smoke, study the ingredients and figure out which books have the best chance of bringing some serious HEAT.

#10 – EC: SHELLSHOCK #1

Oni’s resurrection of EC has been one of the cooler publishing stories happening in comics, and SHELLSHOCK #1 takes that revival straight into the trenches. This giant-sized 56-page war anthology brings Julio Anta, John Arcudi, Michael W. Conrad, Benito Cereno and others together with artists including David Lapham, Tom Fowler, Albert Monteys and Shawn Martinbrough. Lee Bermejo handles Cover A, with additional editions by Tyler Crook, Fowler and incentive variants running through 1:50. Old-school EC war-comic DNA with modern creators? Put the helmet on, fam.

Collector-wise, SHELLSHOCK has a few things going for it. It is a standalone EC-branded #1, the regular Lee Bermejo cover is nasty in the best possible way, and the incentive ladder gives variant hunters somewhere to play. The $8.99 cover price could keep casual impulse buys down, which may actually make certain editions more interesting later if this modern EC revival develops serious long-term collector legs. Early reviews are also landing positively, with AIPT highlighting how well the book carries forward EC’s tradition of confronting the ugliness of war rather than glorifying it.

#9 – BUG WARS: THE COMING OF THE WARDOOM #1

Jason Aaron and Mahmud Asrar are going back into the backyard, except this ain’t somebody’s peaceful little vegetable garden. BUG WARS: THE COMING OF THE WARDOOM #1 launches a new miniseries continuing the savage world of insect kingdoms, roach knights, squirrel armies, giant threats and human beings unfortunate enough to be standing anywhere nearby. Image describes the whole madness like Honey, I Shrunk the Kids getting fed through a Conan-style war machine, and that sentence alone deserves five bucks outta somebody.

Here’s why this slides onto the speculation board: established creators, returning creator-owned IP, fresh #1 numbering and only a relatively compact variant program compared with some of the monsters higher on this list. Aaron has a dedicated audience, Asrar’s visual style fits this sword-and-savagery insanity beautifully, and BUG WARS is exactly the kind of creator-owned concept where early issues can matter if the property keeps expanding. Nobody needs to start hiding ten copies underneath the mattress, but if you dug the first round, I would not sleep on the opening chapter of round two.

#8 – TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #21

TMNT just celebrated the franchise’s 300th overall issue with #20, and Gene Luen Yang and Fero Pe are wasting ZERO time hitting the gas again. TMNT #21 launches the new story “The City That Never Dies,” with the veil between the living and dead breaking down, the Hamato Clan reunited and the destroyed Ujigami mask becoming central to stopping the dead from rising. Ghosts, ninjas, mutant turtles and mystical chaos in New York? Brooklyn approves this message.

The collector angle isn’t some mystery first appearance we have to manufacture for clicks. The attraction is positioning. This is the first regular issue after a landmark #300 celebration, the beginning of a fresh storyline, and Key Collector tracks eight variant editions beyond the standard book. TMNT collectors are a different species, fam. Those people remember cover artists, printings, ratios, convention editions, retailer variants and probably what Raphael ate for breakfast in issue #147. Starting points matter with a franchise carrying this much history, and #21 looks like exactly that kind of jumping-on book.

#7 – INVINCIBLE UNIVERSE: BATTLE BEAST #12

Battle Beast versus Conquest. Round THREE. Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley know exactly what kind of audience walked into this arena, and issue #12 closes the current story arc by letting two of the Invincible Universe’s most terrifying maniacs continue beating holy hell out of each other. Skybound started teasing this showdown weeks ago, and the response has been exactly what anybody who understands Invincible fandom would expect: “Cool story, now please let these two psychos continue trying to murder each other.”

Collectors have a serious variant buffet here. Key Collector tracks eleven variants, while the announced incentive lineup includes 1:10 Chris Burnham, 1:25 Riley Rossmo, 1:50 Miki Montlló and a 1:100 Toni Fejzula edition. Combine that chase-cover structure with Kirkman, Ottley, Invincible Universe fandom and an arc-ending heavyweight fight, and #12 has enough juice to earn a comfortable spot on the HOT List without needing some imaginary “secret cameo” rumor cooked up at 3:00 in the morning.

#6 – DISNEY’S TALESPIN #1

Dynamite Entertainment | Amanda Deibert & Carlo Lauro | On Sale August 19, 2026

OOOOOH-EEEE-YAAAA! Look, if you were alive for Disney Afternoon supremacy, you already heard the theme song in your head the second you read TALESPIN #1. Dynamite is bringing Baloo, Kit Cloudkicker, Rebecca Cunningham and Don Karnage back into comic shops with Amanda Deibert and Carlo Lauro, the creative team behind Darkwing Duck. The opening adventure, “The Wing Walker,” introduces newcomer Skye Ryder while Higher for Hire runs straight into Don Karnage and his air pirates. Nostalgia is doing push-ups in the corner right now.

Now look at the collector side and things get spicy. Key Collector lists 17 variants, meaning 18 total cover entries around this debut, while the standard lineup includes Cat Staggs, Carlo Lauro, animation artwork and character-design art. Seventeen variants is a LOT, so everybody needs to calm down before buying the entire Cape Suzette air fleet, but Disney nostalgia collectors are not casual about this stuff. Animation-art covers, character designs and higher-ratio pieces could become the interesting plays, especially if this new series catches with readers beyond the core nostalgia audience.

#5 – SPIDER-MAN / HULK: FIRE AND BRIMSTONE #1

Marvel Comics | Kevin Smith, Andy McElfresh & R.B. Silva | On Sale August 19, 2026

Kevin Smith writing Spider-Man and Hulk in a story involving the exorcism of Bruce Banner sounds like somebody threw comic-book Mad Libs into a blender, hit MAXIMUM and somehow got a Marvel series out the other side. Smith and Andy McElfresh join artist R.B. Silva for a four-issue limited series built around Spidey quips, Hulk smashing and supernatural madness. Marvel even brought Smith into the SDCC promotional push, so they’re not exactly sneaking this one onto the shelves behind a stack of Damage Control.

Variant hunters have plenty to chew on too. Marvel’s lineup includes covers from Justin Mason, Rose Besch, Marco Checchetto, Skottie Young, Ryan Stegman and CAFU, including foil and virgin options. Key Collector tracks eight variants beyond the main cover. Kevin Smith still brings his own enormous fandom into anything he touches, Spider-Man remains Spider-Man, Hulk remains Hulk, and a #1 featuring both characters is basically built in a laboratory to attract curious readers. The danger is obvious: lots of copies and lots of covers. Pick what you actually dig instead of trying to Pokémon the whole rack.

#4 – The Mortal Thor #14 / Thor #800

EIGHT. HUNDRED. ISSUES.

Whatever somebody thinks about legacy numbering, when Thor reaches #800 you put some respect on the hammer. THE MORTAL THOR #14, carrying the legacy designation THOR #800, celebrates the God of Thunder’s publishing history with Al Ewing and Pasqual Ferry continuing the main saga while Chris Condon, Jesse Lonergan and former Thor/Journey Into Mystery writer Kieron Gillen join the anniversary package. Then Marvel puts an Alex Ross cover on the front because apparently they decided subtlety was for Midgard peasants.

Milestone issues are natural collector magnets because they possess something speculation can never manufacture: historical context. This one is oversized at 48 pages, carries anniversary material and has eight tracked variants beyond Cover A, including work tied to Ryan Stegman and Russell Dauterman. Will every Thor #800 become a retirement fund? Of course not. But when somebody is building a Thor run twenty years from now, guess which giant round number they’re absolutely going to notice? Sometimes collecting isn’t complicated, mi gente. Big milestone, elite creators, killer covers, iconic character. Hammer down.

#3 – THE LAST DRIVER #1

Buckle the hell up. THE LAST DRIVER #1 has been making noise before it even reaches the starting line. Sean Murphy returns with a dystopian America where automated transportation has made human driving illegal, until an outlaw named Clutch jumps behind the wheel to save his granddaughter and ends up igniting a rebellion against the system. Cars, cyberpunk, authoritarian technology, rebellion, family and Murphy drawing machines like somebody personally offended him? Yeah. Comic Crusaders already took this thing around the track, and it MOVES.

The collector story might be even more interesting. A limited SDCC promotional ashcan preceded the launch, and retailer material has positioned this as Murphy’s first new Image series since Tokyo Ghost in 2015. The regular issue has eight tracked variants, including incentive artwork connected to Matteo Scalera and Ryan Ottley, while early reviews and Image’s promotional push have been strong. Reader pull-list chatter is already repeatedly naming the book among this week’s buys. Creator-owned #1, major creator, advance ashcan, killer visual concept and genuine reader curiosity? That’s the recipe we look for around here.

If THE LAST DRIVER connects beyond issue #1, this could become one of those books people later swear they “knew was gonna be big from the beginning.” Uh-huh. Sure you did, Vin Diesel. Save the receipt.

#2 – ABSOLUTE GREEN ARROW #4

BORN ON A MONDAY… ABSOLUTE SOLOMON GRUNDY HAS ARRIVED.

There it is. The Absolute Universe continues doing what has made collectors stalk this line since launch: take recognizable DC mythology, throw it into a wood chipper and see what crawls back out. Pornsak Pichetshote and Rafael Albuquerque’s fourth issue pushes Dinah’s investigation deeper into the Island and officially debuts the Absolute Universe version of Solomon Grundy, giving collectors the magic words they start whispering whenever Wednesday approaches: first appearance.

DC also loaded the cover rack. Key Collector currently tracks eleven variants beyond the standard edition, while announced covers include Martin Simmonds, Kris Anka, Gerald Parel, Tirso Cons and retailer-exclusive pieces from names including Mark Brooks. The Absolute line already carries an audience specifically trained to watch for redesigned characters and new continuity firsts, so a recognizable Batman/DC villain receiving his first Absolute incarnation is exactly the kind of thing that wakes speculation hunters up before the alarm clock.

Could Absolute Solomon Grundy become a major player? Nobody knows yet. Could DC redesign him again fifteen minutes from now because comics are comics? Absolutely. What we do know is that #4 has a clearly identifiable first appearance, a deep cover program, strong Absolute-brand heat and recurring pull-list interest this week. That’s enough smoke to get very close to the crown.

#1 – G.I. JOE #25

YO JOE! Yeah, this one walked into the room already wearing the belt. G.I. JOE #25 is an extra-sized landmark issue kicking off G.I. JOE VS. NIGHT FORCE, billed as the biggest G.I. Joe story yet in the Energon Universe. Joe versus Joe. Friends becoming enemies. A major new story arc. Eleven tracked variants. Wraparounds, incentives, foil treatments, blanks, a die-cut mask edition and a 1:100 Jonboy Meyers foil variant. Skybound did not bring a snack to the collector party. They brought the whole damn catering truck.

Then we hit the part that pushes #25 over the top. Key Collector identifies two first appearances: Major Medusa and G.I. BAT. First appearances don’t magically guarantee value, and anybody telling you otherwise probably has a short box full of “guaranteed investments” they’d love to sell you, but recognizable franchise debuts inside a milestone issue kicking off a major Energon Universe storyline? Now we’re talking ingredients collectors actually pay attention to.

The Energon Universe has built its reputation by making old-school properties feel dangerous and relevant again rather than embalming them in nostalgia, and G.I. JOE #25 looks designed as both a payoff and another jumping-off ramp. The issue is already appearing across community pull lists alongside this week’s other heavy hitters, and its mix of franchise heat, first appearances, milestone numbering, new-arc accessibility and aggressive variant strategy makes it the most complete collector package releasing this week.

So yeah, Crusaders, G.I. JOE #25 is your Comic Crusaders HOT List champion for August 18 and 19, 2026. COBRA can file a complaint with management.

New Comic Book Day this week is one of those beautiful little monsters where the reader pick and collector pick don’t always have to be the same thing. THE LAST DRIVER #1 might be the book people are still recommending months from now. ABSOLUTE GREEN ARROW #4 gives spec hunters a clean first appearance to chase. THOR #800 belongs in the history books regardless of tomorrow’s eBay prices. TALESPIN #1 weaponizes childhood nostalgia like Don Karnage stole the keys to the Disney vault. BATTLE BEAST is pure violence therapy, TMNT is starting another supernatural chapter, and EC’s SHELLSHOCK proves the indie side of the rack ain’t standing around waiting for Marvel and DC to finish talking.

Buy what you love. Hunt smart. Don’t confuse scarcity with quality, don’t confuse a ratio number with guaranteed value, and for the love of Jack Kirby, don’t pay rent money for a Wednesday morning rumor somebody posted from an account called @DefinitelyNotAComicShopOwner.
