The critically acclaimed horror-noir series unleashes childhood trauma, interdimensional predators, and one seriously disturbing imaginary friend in a complete trade paperback edition arriving this fall.
That imaginary friend you swore was hiding in the corner of your childhood bedroom? Yeah… maybe they were not so imaginary after all. The fan-favorite horror miniseries Imaginary Fiends, created by writer Tim Seeley (Revival, Hack/Slash) and artist Stephen Molnar (Star Trek/Green Lantern, Danger Girl: Renegade), is crawling back out of the darkness. Image Comics will collect the chilling series in its entirety in a new trade paperback edition arriving this fall.
Originally published by DC’s Vertigo imprint, Imaginary Fiends earned widespread critical acclaim for blending supernatural horror, psychological trauma, and crime-noir investigation into one deeply unsettling package. The series carries the slow-burning dread of Scott Snyder and Jock’s Wytches while diving into the twisted conspiratorial territory of James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds’ The Department of Truth. But make no mistake Imaginary Fiends brings its own uniquely disturbing monsters to the party.
When Melba Li was only 10 years old, she was committed to a mental institution after attempting to murder one of her classmates. Melba insisted she had not acted alone. She blamed the attack on Polly Peachpit, a towering, spider-like phantom that had haunted, manipulated, and tormented her. The adults believed Polly was nothing more than the invention of a deeply troubled child. They were wrong.
Now, on the eve of her 18th birthday, Melba receives an unexpected visit and an even stranger opportunity from the FBI. In exchange for a reprieve from her sentence, she must join Special Agent Virgil Crockett and help track down dangerous entities known as I.M.P.s: Interdimensional Mental Parasites. These creatures attach themselves to vulnerable human minds, feeding on fear, isolation, trauma, and obsession. They remain invisible to almost everyone, leaving their victims trapped between horrifying reality and what the rest of the world dismisses as madness. Polly Peachpit is one of them.
Crockett needs Melba to reconnect with the creature that destroyed her childhood because only I.M.P.s and the humans bonded to them can see, understand, and interact with one another. To hunt the monsters hiding inside the minds of their victims, Melba must form an uneasy partnership with the very nightmare that drove her to the edge. Successful missions could mean freedom and a chance to reclaim the life stolen from her. Failure could send her straight back into the darkness. The deeper Melba and Crockett travel into the world of the I.M.P.s, the more the line between predator and protector begins to blur. Polly may be manipulative, monstrous, and absolutely terrifying but she might also be the only creature capable of keeping Melba alive. The real question is whether Melba can survive working alongside her childhood tormentor without losing what remains of her sanity.
“When I first came up with Imaginary Fiends, I envisioned it as a horror story for a new generation a comic book for the kind of fans who were into creepypastas, Slender Man, and backrooms,” said Seeley. “And with this new release, we’re finally at the right time and in the right place. Imaginary Fiends is one of my favorite series I’ve done a dark tale of imagination, disconnection, and obsession…with sexy monsters and beautiful art by Stephen and Quinton.”
With its terrifying creature designs, emotionally damaged characters, and a mystery that digs into the darkest corners of the human mind, Imaginary Fiends is more than a story about monsters hiding beneath the bed. It is about what happens when fear becomes real, trauma grows teeth, and the imaginary friend who ruined your life becomes the only friend you can trust.
