Dark Horse and Marvel saddle up for a three-volume archival collection restoring the King’s action-packed Western stories, beginning with the rarely revisited years of 1957–1961
Before Marvel’s superheroes conquered New York City, Jack Kirby was kicking up dust across the American frontier. Now Dark Horse Books and Marvel Comics are opening the vault and bringing that nearly forgotten chapter of the King’s legendary career back into the spotlight.
Created in collaboration with editor and Marvel archival consultant Cory Sedlmeier, The King Goes West: The Complete Marvel Westerns by Jack Kirby Volume 1: 1957–1961 launches an ambitious three-volume collection dedicated to Kirby’s Marvel Western work. The opening hardcover rounds up classic stories, long-unavailable material, rare covers and beautifully restored artwork from one of the most important creators ever to touch a comic-book page.
This is Jack Kirby before the Fantastic Four rocketed into space, before Thor raised Mjolnir and before the Avengers assembled. The explosive movement, dramatic storytelling and larger-than-life characters that would eventually help define the Marvel Universe were already blazing across dusty towns, dangerous trails and lawless frontiers. The capes may not have arrived yet, but the Kirby thunder was already cracking, fam.
“Jack Kirby’s Marvel Westerns are the last major frontier to explore in his vast career,” said Sedlmeier. “I’ve been working behind the scenes for years to bring the King’s Western work back into print, and I’m proud that Dark Horse has come along for the ride.”
Sedlmeier explained that every story and cover has been carefully restored using the strongest archival sources available, including rare materials acquired in 2023. The result promises to give this overlooked period of Kirby’s career the comprehensive presentation it has long deserved.
The collection puts readers in the saddle alongside gunslingers, pioneers, outlaws and heroes forced to carve justice out of a landscape where the law occasionally arrived late, if it bothered showing up at all.
Among the featured characters is Johnny Bart, Kirby’s reinvented Rawhide Kid, a skilled young gunfighter who vows to avenge the murder of his Uncle Ben. Yes, Marvel had another hero driven by the death of an Uncle Ben before Spider-Man started swinging through Manhattan. Comic-book history stays dropping wild little gems when you dig deep enough.
Kirby also takes aim with the original Two-Gun Kid and the mysterious Black Rider while delivering tightly constructed morality tales about survival, revenge, courage and justice on the American frontier. These stories already contain the creative DNA of the Marvel heroes that would follow: dynamic action, powerful silhouettes, emotional stakes and characters who refuse to stay down when the world hits them hard.
The restoration draws from original artwork and other premium archival materials, preserving the energy of Kirby’s linework while allowing a new generation to experience these stories with fresh eyes. Beyond being one serious slab of Western entertainment, the collection offers fans and historians a valuable look at Kirby’s artistic evolution during the years leading into the modern Marvel Age.
Volume 1 collects Jack Kirby stories and covers from Quick-Trigger Western #16; Black Rider #1; Two-Gun Western #12; Gunsmoke Western #47, #51–53 and #56–62; Wyatt Earp #22, #24–26 and #29; Kid Colt Outlaw #83 and #85–97; Two-Gun Kid #48, #52 and #54–57; and Rawhide Kid #17–20.
Clocking in at 216 pages and measuring 7 by 10 inches, The King Goes West: The Complete Marvel Westerns by Jack Kirby Volume 1: 1957–1961 arrives in bookstores and comic shops on February 2, 2027, with a retail price of $59.99.
For Kirby collectors, Marvel historians and anybody who enjoys six-shooters, hard justice and artwork built to hit like a runaway stagecoach, this collection belongs on the wanted list. The King is heading West again, mi gente, and this time Dark Horse and Marvel are bringing the whole frontier with him.
