Mad Cave Turns Don Quixote Into Horror With LA MANCHA #1

·Juan James

LA MANCHA #1 Cover A by Ibrahim Moustafa

Don Quixote has been remixed, reworked and dragged through just about every corner of pop culture, but Mad Cave Studios is taking the old knight somewhere nastier. LA MANCHA #1 turns the famous dreamer into the danger, with his obsession and delusion leaving an actual body count behind while everyone around him has to deal with the consequences.

The new six-issue horror series comes from writer Christopher Sebela, artist Ibrahim Moustafa, colorist Brad Simpson and letterer Joe Sabino. The setup keeps Don Quixote chasing his impossible heroic fantasy across La Mancha with Sancho Panza at his side, but this version makes the fantasy bloody enough that somebody has to stop him. That somebody is Dulcinea del Toboso, no longer just an idealized woman in somebody else’s story, but a farm girl forced to take up arms when Quixote’s obsession tears into her life.

That shift is the part that has my comic-nerd brain awake. Instead of treating the source material like a museum piece, the book appears ready to argue with it, especially the idea of a man deciding what a woman means inside the legend he has built for himself. Mad Cave describes the series as darkly funny as well as brutal, so there is room here for the absurdity that has always been baked into Don Quixote without pretending the damage is harmless.

LA MANCHA #1 Cover D by Francesco Francavilla

Moustafa handles the main cover, with variants from Jacob Phillips, Phil Hester and Francesco Francavilla. Mad Cave has been leaning hard into smart reinventions lately, and Sebela is also involved with the publisher’s return of Rip Kirby, which Comic Crusaders recently covered. If that appetite for digging into older material carries over here, LA MANCHA could be one of the stranger books on the winter rack.

LA MANCHA #1 is scheduled to hit comic shops on December 16, 2026, with final order cutoff set for November 23. Readers can preorder through their local comic shop or check out Mad Cave’s official LA MANCHA #1 page for the available covers and release details. If you like classic literature getting dragged through broken glass before it lands on the spinner rack, this one deserves a look.
