Jonathan Hickman, Nick Spencer, Mike del Mundo & Mike Huddleston Unleash Three Worlds / Three Moons in Dark Horse’s July Horsepower

Dark Horse Comics is pulling back the curtain on one of the most ambitious world-building experiments currently unfolding in comics.

As part of the publisher’s monthly Horsepower feature, legendary creators Jonathan Hickman, Nick Spencer, Mike del Mundo, and Mike Huddleston are inviting readers into the expanding universe of Three Worlds / Three Moons—and revealing how its first major release, Foundations, grew from a bold creative question. What happens when an audience does not simply enter a fictional universe after it has been completed, but gets to witness that universe being constructed in real time?

For several years, the creative team behind Three Worlds / Three Moons has been exploring that idea through 3w3m.com. Instead of disappearing behind closed doors to develop an entire mythology in secret, the creators opened the process to thousands of readers, allowing the community to experience the brainstorming, experimentation, revisions, and discoveries that shaped the project.

Traditionally, comic book world-building follows one of two paths. A creator may spend years privately developing characters, histories, maps, cultures, and rules before unveiling the finished story. Another approach allows the universe to grow naturally as the narrative progresses, expanding whenever the plot demands something new.

Hickman, Spencer, del Mundo, and Huddleston decided to smash those two methods together. The team began with the foundation of a massive universe but developed it openly, allowing readers to watch ideas evolve from loose concepts into a fully realized mythology. Feedback, experimentation, and community participation became part of the creative DNA.

That experiment has now produced hundreds of pages of lore, maps, backstories, concept artwork, short stories, digital narratives, and deluxe sourcebooks. Some projects revisit the spirit of classic science-fiction serials, while others invite acclaimed creative teams to explore different corners of the universe and add their own voices to its ever-expanding mythology.

Now, Dark Horse is helping bring that material to comic shops and bookstores, opening the gates for an even larger audience to join the journey. The first major step is Foundations.

Written by Jonathan Hickman and Nick Spencer, with artwork by Mike del Mundo and Mike Huddleston, Foundations introduces readers to Tajo Vallar and a solar system trapped in an endless struggle between order and chaos, science and magic.

When Vallar embarks on a doomed mission to a dead moon, the consequences do not end with him. What happens to the family he leaves behind becomes the spark for a much larger conflict—one destined to reshape the entire Three Worlds / Three Moons universe.

Foundations is not simply the beginning of another science-fiction saga. It is the first doorway into a universe built publicly, collaboratively, and with the audience watching every wild idea take shape. The experiment is over. Now the real adventure begins. Foundations is available now wherever comic books are sold.
