Wolcen 2 Unleashed: Dark Fantasy ARPG Sequel Targets 2027 Early Access

Wolcen is back, and this time the studio is coming into the fight with lessons learned, a new technical foundation and a bigger co-op vision.
Wolcen Studio officially revealed Wolcen 2 during the Future Games Show at gamescom 2026, confirming that the dark fantasy action RPG sequel is targeting Steam Early Access in 2027. Set years after Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem, the sequel drops players into a world once again staring down total collapse, with brutal hack-and-slash combat, deep character building and reality-bending powers sitting at the center of the experience.
The first closed playtest is already underway through the Wolcen Studio Playtest Program, giving the community an early chance to help shape the game before its Early Access debut. Registration does not guarantee access, but players who sign up will also be considered for future testing opportunities.
One of the biggest ideas returning from the original game is freedom of character creation. Wolcen 2 will not lock players into predefined classes. Instead, weapons determine the abilities available to you, while passive talents, gear and skill customization let each build evolve in a different direction.
Want a melee mage? Go for it. Spellblade? Tank caster? Gunslinger? The system is built to let players chase mechanical combinations rather than follow a rigid class template. Wolcen Studio says skills, weapons, passives and equipment are designed to work together, encouraging players to hunt for build-defining items, craft gear and experiment with synergies that can completely change how a character fights.
The sequel can be played solo or with up to four players online. Combat is being positioned as fast, rhythmic and aggressive, with players chaining abilities through large groups of enemies before facing heavier boss encounters. When things get ugly, Shadow Form lets players tap into a darker transformation designed to flip the momentum of a fight.
Wolcen Studio is also changing how multiplayer works. The sequel is being developed around peer-to-peer hosting rather than depending entirely on centralized servers. The studio has openly acknowledged the concerns some longtime players have after support for the original game ended and says those lessons are influencing the sequel’s development from the start.
According to Wolcen Studio’s current community FAQ, Wolcen 2 is being built in Unreal Engine 5 rather than the older CryEngine technology used for Lords of Mayhem. The studio says the move gives the team a stronger foundation for optimization, visual quality and development across modern PC hardware and current-generation consoles.
The 2027 Early Access launch is planned for PC first, with the full version intended for PC and current-generation consoles. Wolcen Studio says player feedback will be a major part of development, with additional story content, activities and endgame systems planned to expand over time.
Beyond the campaign, players can expect long-term progression through modes such as Conquest, where factions continue battling for territory and power, and the Tower of Wonders, which is designed around focused reward hunting while allowing players to influence the difficulty and outcome of each climb.
