Kenji Kamiyama leads an ambitious new Gundam universe connecting anime, gaming, and multiple generations through one continuously evolving story.
Bandai Namco Filmworks is taking Gundam somewhere brand-new, and they are not playing small.
The company has officially unveiled the RG PROJECT, a next-generation multimedia initiative designed to expand the legendary Gundam franchise across anime, video games, and additional forms of entertainment. At the center of this new era is acclaimed science-fiction filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama, the visionary behind Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Star Wars: Visions Volume 3.
Kamiyama is building the foundation of an entirely new Gundam universe alongside celebrated science-fiction author Toh EnJoe, creating a world where every project connects through one shared history.
Leading the charge is the upcoming anime MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM RG XARX-ZERO, directed by Kamiyama and animated by SOLA ANIMATION. The series is currently set to launch in 2027, opening the door to a saga designed to stretch across generations.
And no, this is not just another Gundam side story tossed into the mix. The RG PROJECT is being developed as one massive, connected universe.
The initiative brings together MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM RG XARX-ZERO and the upcoming high-mobility action game GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT. Both projects take place within the same world, but each tells the story from a different point in history and gives fans a different way to experience the conflict.
RG XARX-ZERO takes place roughly 100 years before the events of GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, revealing the origins of this new universe and the events that shaped everything that follows.
The anime will show fans how the world was built, how its conflicts began, and what choices set future generations on their path. Then GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT jumps forward a century into a future still dealing with the consequences of everything that happened before. That is where things get real interesting.
The anime establishes the history. The game allows players to step into the future created by that history and make choices of their own. One story builds the foundation, while the other lets fans live inside the aftermath.
That kind of cross-media storytelling could give Gundam fans something deeper than a simple anime and game tie-in. This is a universe designed to grow over time, where actions, wars, characters, and consequences echo across entire generations.
Kamiyama is a perfect choice to lead something this ambitious. His work has consistently explored technology, identity, politics, humanity, and the complicated relationship between people and the machines they create. Yeah, fam, that sounds like Gundam territory all day.
With Toh EnJoe helping develop the worldbuilding, the RG PROJECT has the potential to deliver a Gundam universe packed with layered history, complex ideas, and the kind of moral conflict that has defined the franchise for decades. The biggest question now is how far Bandai Namco plans to take it.
The company has already confirmed anime and gaming projects, but the announcement also points toward additional media. That could mean manga, novels, merchandise, interactive experiences, or even more stories set across different points in the timeline. Whatever comes next, one thing is clear. Gundam is entering a new era.
MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM RG XARX-ZERO will begin the story in 2027, while GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT carries that legacy into the future. Together, they form the opening chapters of an ambitious new universe built around war, technology, consequences, and the choices that shape history.
The mobile suits are ready.
The universe is expanding.
And the RG PROJECT may be Gundam’s next giant leap forward.
