BUDDY Breaks Out as Killer-Unicorn Horror Scores $5.36M Opening Weekend
·Daniel Black

That bright orange unicorn just kicked the box office door open. BUDDY, the off-the-rails horror-comedy from writer-director Casper Kelly, pulled in an estimated $5,363,827 from just 1,258 theaters over its opening weekend, doubling early projections and giving indie horror another reason to smile.
According to Roadside Attractions and Saban Films, the result makes BUDDY the biggest 2026 opening so far for a film released on fewer than 1,800 screens. It also marks Roadside Attractions’ strongest opening since the pandemic and its second-highest debut in company history, while Saban Films lands the biggest opening weekend of its 12-year run.
- Opening weekend: $5.36 million
- Theaters: 1,258
- Roadside Attractions: Best opening since the pandemic
- Saban Films: Biggest opening weekend in company history
The movie takes the sugar-coated language of a classic children’s TV show and sends it straight into nightmare territory. Inside the colorful world of It’s Buddy!, a group of children sing, dance and learn life lessons alongside Buddy, a giant orange unicorn who seems built to deliver hugs, positivity and Saturday-morning comfort. Once one child refuses to play along, the smiles start cracking and the whole fantasy begins revealing something much darker underneath.
Kelly, best known for the viral Adult Swim short Too Many Cooks, directs from a script he co-wrote with Jamie King. The cast includes Cristin Milioti, Delaney Quinn, Patton Oswalt, Michael Shannon, Topher Grace and Keegan-Michael Key, with Key voicing the increasingly terrifying Buddy. The movie leans hard into practical effects, surreal comedy and the kind of cheerful visual language that becomes extra disturbing once the horror starts creeping in.
The audience response has also become part of the story. Exit polling supplied by the distributors shows that 83 percent of the opening-weekend audience was under 35, while Hispanic moviegoers accounted for 37 percent. That younger turnout tracks with the movie’s aggressive social push, which has generated more than 150 million views across its channels and helped turn Buddy himself into a recognizable horror personality before the film ever hit theaters.
For indie genre movies, this is the kind of opening that gets attention. BUDDY is not arriving with franchise armor or a giant studio machine behind it. It is a strange, original horror-comedy built around a murderous unicorn mascot, and audiences still showed up. Comic Crusaders has been keeping an eye on inventive genre releases, including The Haunted Heist and the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, and BUDDY now joins that conversation as one of the more interesting horror success stories of 2026.
BUDDY is now playing in theaters. The film is directed by Casper Kelly and written by Casper Kelly and Jamie King, with Roadside Attractions and Saban Films handling the release. Watch the official BUDDY teaser and keep it locked to Comic Crusaders for more movie and horror coverage.
