JEAN GREY RETURNS TO EARTH AS THE PHOENIX IGNITES A BRAND-NEW SOLO SERIES THIS NOVEMBER

Jed MacKay and Rogê Antônio unleash a five-issue JEAN GREY limited series spinning directly out of DNX, and the Phoenix is bringing the heat back home.

 Oh, Marvel is playing with fire now.

Jean Grey is headed back to Earth this November, and after everything she has experienced across the cosmos as Phoenix, this is not exactly going to be some peaceful little homecoming with hugs, coffee, and everybody pretending the universe hasn’t been turned upside down.

Marvel’s JEAN GREY #1 launches a new five-issue limited series from X-Men writer Jed MacKay and acclaimed artist Rogê Antônio, whose recent work on Cyclops already has X-fans paying attention. The new series spins directly out of DNX, the upcoming X-Men and Fantastic Four crossover from MacKay and artist Federico Vicentini, and from the sound of things, whatever goes down in that event is going to leave some serious scorch marks across mutantkind.

The conclusion of DNX sends Jean racing back to Earth, but she is already behind the curve. Something major has happened while she was away, the X-Men’s world has changed dramatically, and the fallout Jean was unable to prevent is poised to reshape MacKay’s corner of the mutant universe moving forward. Yeah, Crusaders. Jean Grey is coming home, but home ain’t exactly sitting there waiting with the porch light on. The big question hanging over the series is one Jean has wrestled with for generations: How do you carry the power of the Phoenix without letting that power carry you?

Jean returns with a cosmic force burning inside her, one capable of giving life just as easily as it can erase it. When the Phoenix touches back down on Earth, Jean must once again confront the razor-thin line between control and destruction. With the world around her already destabilized by the events of DNX, that is one hell of a time to be walking around with enough power to make planets nervous. MacKay explained to AIPT Comics that Jean’s return to the main X-Men orbit was something he deliberately held back until the story demanded it.

“More than anything, it felt like it was time—Jean coming into X-Men was largely precluded by the Phoenix series that was running when we launched, and even after that wrapped, I continued to hold off on it until the time seemed right,” MacKay explained. “After all, adding the Phoenix to your team book throws off the balance in a pretty dramatic way.”

Come on, the man ain’t wrong. Adding Jean Grey is already a major move. Adding Jean Grey with the Phoenix fully in play changes the entire math of an X-Men story. Suddenly every threat, every battle, and every decision exists in the shadow of somebody capable of operating on an entirely different power scale.

MacKay continued:

“Now, post-DNX, we’re going to see the X-Men in a position to need Jean Grey—and Jean Grey in a position to need the X-Men. Dovetailing that into this moment being one where Jean is in the public consciousness more than she has previously just worked.”

That’s the hook! This isn’t just “Jean Grey comes back because fans love Jean Grey.” The setup gives her return an emotional purpose. The X-Men need one of their most powerful allies at a moment when their world is shaking, while Jean herself may need the grounding, history, and family that the X-Men represent more than she wants to admit. X-Men Editor Tom Brevoort also made it clear that DNX is not being positioned as some crossover everybody forgets about two Wednesdays later. Its consequences are going to spread. Speaking with AIPT about what follows the event, Brevoort said:

“In terms of after-effects, you already know about one thing that’ll be coming straight out of it: JEAN GREY. And it’ll have an impact on the launch of Maximum X-Men as well, though not to the point where you’ll have to have read one to follow the other. The effects will also ripple out to some degree across the other books. But the biggest place it will hit is in Alaska and in Jed’s slice of the pie, where it will be relatively seismic.”

Relatively seismic? Fam, you don’t casually throw that phrase into an X-Men conversation unless somebody is about to have a VERY bad week. The five-issue series also arrives with a stacked lineup of covers from Joëlle Jones, Miguel Mercado, and Nogi San, giving collectors and longtime Jean Grey fans plenty to hunt down when the book hits shelves.

For readers looking to follow the fire from the beginning, DNX launches September 2, setting the stage for Jean’s return and whatever universe-rattling situation sends the Phoenix racing back toward Earth. Then, this November, JEAN GREY #1 officially lights the fuse.

Jean Grey has spent years dying, returning, evolving, ascending, falling, loving, losing, and carrying a cosmic burden that would break damn near anybody else in the Marvel Universe. Now she is coming back to the place where so much of that journey began, except neither Jean nor the X-Men she remembers are standing in quite the same place anymore.

That makes this more than another Phoenix power showcase. It makes it a homecoming with consequences. And when Jean Grey comes home carrying fire from the stars?
