LOBA LOCA Tears Back Into the MFKZ Universe With a Wild New Kickstarter Road Trip

The MFKZ universe is cracking open again, and this time the ride looks faster, meaner, stranger, and way more personal.
Oni Press, Magnetic Press, and France’s Label 619 are teaming up for LOBA LOCA, a brand-new graphic novel from Run and Guillaume Singelin that throws readers straight back into the world of MFKZ with a fresh lead, a dangerous road trip, and enough chaos packed into the streets to make sitting this one out feel impossible.
The project is live on Kickstarter right now, and fans can support LOBA LOCA here.
For anybody who has followed the evolution of MFKZ, this new chapter has some serious pedigree behind it. The universe began with Guillaume “Run” Renard’s 2002 short film Mutafukaz: Operation Blackhead before growing into the acclaimed graphic novel series and the animated feature produced by Studio 4C and Ankama.
The film eventually reached a much wider audience through Netflix, with direction from Shôjirô Nishimi and Renard and an English-language voice cast featuring Vince Staples, Kenn Michael, Giancarlo Esposito, Danny Trejo, and RZA. Now Run is coming back to the sandbox, but he ain’t walking in alone.
For LOBA LOCA, he joins forces with acclaimed illustrator and animator Guillaume Singelin, known for work including PTSD, and the combination already feels like it could push this universe somewhere different instead of simply replaying old hits.
At the center of the story is Guadalupe “Guada” Mayflower, a rebellious seventeen-year-old already dealing with enough headaches from school bullies, social media drama, and the everyday nonsense of being a teenager. Then everything gets flipped.
After one explosive outburst gets caught on camera and lands Guada under house arrest, she starts digging around her mother’s attic. What she finds is a diary loaded with family secrets, including information about the true identity of her notorious father. Yeah, family drama just went nuclear.
Guada heads out on a dangerous journey through the city’s criminal underworld, crossing paths with legendary luchadores, vicious crime figures, reality television personalities, and a collection of people who make her previous problems look like lunch detention.
Underneath all the action, the story digs into identity, alienation, family history, and what happens when the person you thought you were collides headfirst with the truth.
Magnetic Press Director of Publishing Mike Kennedy describes the book as a project that expands the MFKZ world while pulling the focus closer to its characters, combining Run’s grimy pulp energy with Singelin’s cinematic visual storytelling. That creative mix could be the secret sauce here.
MFKZ has always had this loud, hyper-stylized personality where conspiracy, violence, weirdness, pop culture, and street-level madness can exist side by side without asking permission. LOBA LOCA sounds like it keeps that DNA while bringing the emotional camera closer to Guada and her search for answers.
Visually, Singelin is a hell of a fit for that mission. His work carries movement, personality, and atmosphere without needing to scream on every page, which could make the contrast between Guada’s internal struggle and the insanity surrounding her hit even harder. Collectors are getting more than one way to jump aboard too.
Alongside the standard softcover edition, Magnetic Press is producing a Deluxe Hardcover and a Limited Edition Slipcase Edition featuring a foil-stamped textured slipcase, foil-stamped bookplate, and an exclusive set of enamel pins. Basically, if you’re one of those people who says, “I only need the regular edition,” right before ordering the fancy version at 1:17 in the morning, they already got you. 😂
The big appeal here, though, isn’t just another return to a familiar franchise. LOBA LOCA looks like an opportunity to stretch MFKZ without sanding away what made that universe pop in the first place. New character. New emotional angle. Same dangerous city energy.
Run and Singelin aren’t simply taking another lap around the block. They’re handing the keys to Guada, pointing toward the ugliest part of town, and seeing what happens when she floors it.
