Wolverine has survived wars, assassins, experiments, shattered memories, and enough trauma to bury ten lifetimes. This December, Marvel Comics is cracking open another sealed chapter of Logan’s past, and what crawls out may change how fans see the legendary X-Man forever.
WOLVERINE: ORIGIN III – THE DARK AGE reunites writer Paul Jenkins with the world of ORIGIN for a psychologically intense five-issue limited series illustrated by superstar artist CAFU. Twenty-five years after Jenkins helped reveal the childhood of James Howlett, he is returning to expose the dark and deeply personal road that eventually led Logan toward Weapon X.
Following years of trauma and back-to-back tours of duty during the First and Second World Wars, Logan is exhausted by violence. Somehow, the berserker rage that has haunted him appears to be gone. For the first time in what feels like forever, he has found peace.
Logan builds a quiet life centered on tranquility and service. He forms new friendships, discovers unexpected allies, and begins working with an impassioned young doctor determined to understand what makes him tick. For a man who has spent most of his existence fighting, bleeding, and surviving, happiness suddenly feels possible. Yeah, mi gente, you already know peace never stays peaceful in Wolverine’s world.
Something is wrong. Logan’s newfound stability may not be as natural as it seems, and the truth behind it could be more terrifying than the rage itself. Whatever happened during this hidden period of the 1950s left scars buried beneath his fractured memories and helped shape the man and mutant the world would eventually know as Wolverine.
“Wolverine: Origin was foundational. It did not simply tell us how, why, and where a young, frail Canadian named James Howlett became the super hero we know as Wolverine, it also showed his loss of innocence and his understanding of a cruel and difficult world,” writer Paul Jenkins explained. “Now, after 25 years, I’m privileged to present this story I have waited over a quarter of a century to tell. Where did Logan go? Which parts of his story were lost to history? What led to the events of Weapon X? The answers are not going to be what you expect.”

Jenkins helped redefine Wolverine’s mythology with 2001’s WOLVERINE: ORIGIN, created alongside artist Andy Kubert. The landmark series finally pulled back the curtain on Logan’s mysterious beginnings, revealing the fragile young James Howlett and the brutal circumstances that forged him into one of Marvel’s most enduring characters. Now Jenkins is returning to the scene of the crime, creatively speaking, to fill in another massive blank in Logan’s history.
WOLVERINE: ORIGIN III – THE DARK AGE promises a raw exploration of Logan’s mind, his damaged memories, and the forces that manipulated his identity long before Weapon X turned his skeleton into adamantium. This is not simply another lost Wolverine adventure. Marvel is positioning it as a crucial bridge connecting Logan’s wartime experiences, his fractured psyche, and the horrifying future waiting for him. CAFU is bringing that nightmare to life, and the acclaimed artist is not taking the assignment lightly.
“I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say this is the most important project I’ve worked on in my entire career,” CAFU shared. “Origin is one of my all-time favorite Wolverine stories, and I’ve loved Paul Jenkins’ work since I was a teenager, so becoming a part of the continuation of that story and being able to tell a little more about Logan’s past is a dream come true.”
The creative team is digging into the emotional wreckage beneath the claws, the rage, and the reputation. Logan may believe he has finally escaped the violence that defined him, but every Wolverine fan knows the ugly truth: history has a vicious way of hunting him down.
WOLVERINE: ORIGIN III – THE DARK AGE #1 slices into comic shops this December with a main cover by Wes Burt and a variant cover by Josemaria Casanovas. More details and artwork will be revealed in an upcoming Marvel Previews catalog.
